Background

The government has recognised the importance of informal adult learning through the White Paper The Learning Revolution published last year. Accompanying this was a number of initiatives to support informal learning in a variety of ways e.g. the Transformation Fund for projects supporting informal adult learning, Community Learning Champions scheme support and funding among others.

Although not specifically a target group for the Transformation Fund, adults with literacy, language and numeracy needs make up a proportion of those being encouraged to take up informal learning opportunities through this route. The Community Learning Champions scheme will also be seeking to encourage learners with literacy, language and numeracy needs to get involved. There are also numerous other informal learning settings where learners may need support with literacy, language and numeracy skills.

This event will offer some examples of creative ways to work with such learners particularly in informal adult learning settings. It will provide an opportunity to discuss ways to engage learners in a range of learning opportunities and to consider what some of the challenges and issues might be in ensuring that these learners are given the quality support that they need to keep them engaged and to help them progress.
