Training Context

One in six adults experiences a mental health problem at any one time; one in five employees can experience mental ill-health in a year. The significant role education and sustainable employment can play in promoting recovery, highlighted in Realising ambitions: better employment support for people with a mental health condition (DWP 2009), now underpins the government’s strategy to combat the economic and social welfare costs of mental health problems.  No health without mental health (DH, 2011) recognises people with a mental health problem who experience multiple and/or complex barriers to participation need effective individual support and how greater collaboration across services is required to achieve this.

The ideas and supporting resources introduced during this training will help you to develop more effective practice to meet this challenge. The content has been devised in collaboration with the many practitioners and people with lived experience of mental health problems who took part in the Take Ten People national project (2009-10) and Take Ten People in the North East regional activities (2010-11), and reflects what has been demonstrated really "works".

What this workshop will do

Outcomes for organisations include:

  • Increased positive and sustainable vocational outcomes for clients with a mental health problem who experience multiple and/or complex barriers to participation in education and/or employment;
  • Practitioners with increased confidence and understanding of how employability skills can be developed across sectors (health and social care, employment, Third Sector, learning and skills) and integrated into service delivery to best support progression towards education and/or employment for people with a mental health problem.

The workshop will enable participants:

  • To identify the most effective ways of working to support people with experience of a mental health problem who may face multiple and/or complex barriers to participation;
  • To recognise resilience as an employability skill and understand the role it plays for people with a mental health problem in recovery, wellbeing and engaging with the social world of education and work;
  • To identify how services offered by partners in other sectors may help achieve improved outcomes for individuals.
