Background

As we witness the rapid growth in the market for E Reading devices and E Books, this seminar will explore the potential of this technology in adult learning programmes and explore the implications for policy and practice. The seminar will be informed by case study examples and research into the use of E readers. This event will be planned and delivered jointly by NIACE and The Association for Learning Technology (ALT) and will cover the range of adult learning including initial literacy classes, adult community learning, further education and higher education.

Aims

The seminar aims to provide a forum for practitioners, researchers and leaders working in all areas of adult learning to explore the opportunities presented by the rapid growth in availability of electronic texts through E readers and other mobile devices.

Participants will be able to engage in a professional dialogue on the ways in which this technology can enhance learning experiences.

Genevieve Clarke from the Reading Agency will facilitate a discussion on how the use of e-readers can open up the benefits of reading for pleasure to support skills development with people who wouldn't pick up a printed book.

In addition, we will arrange sector focused groups which reflect the areas of work of seminar attendees.  We anticipate that these will cover:

Event Information

  • Arrival and registration is at 10:15am for a 10:45am start. The event will end at 3:15pm
  • Event fee per person: £99. Reduced fee for members of NIACE and ALT: £69
    (includes sandwich lunch, tea/coffee)
    A limited number of free bursary places are available for practitioners to attend this event.
    To be eligible for a bursary place you must:
    - be a practitioner or volunteer working directly with adult learners in any area of formal or
       non formal learning
    - demonstrate that you have been unable to obtain funding from your employer to attend the seminar
    - demonstrate that after attending you will carry out some cascade activity
       (CPD session or report for colleagues, newsletter, article, etc.)
    Bursaries will cover full cost of the delegate fee but delegates must fund their own travel costs.

  • NB: NIACE does not charge VAT on conference or course fees
