Background
Our vision
Imagine a world where the ambitions, dreams, talents and skills of girls and women are not limited by the barriers they face simply because they were born female. Imagine how the world would benefit from all their energy, creativity, brain power, passion, and 'know how'. Continuing gender inequality is an unacceptable source of large-scale injustice. But it's also an unacceptable waste of women's hidden potential. We know things can, and should, work differently and that learning is the key to unlocking a better future. That's our vision. We hope it will be yours and that you'll join us in making it a reality.
NIACE has a long history of supporting women's right to learn through our research, publications and events and last year organised an event that celebrated the 100th International Women's Day. Women started drafting a manifesto for women's access to learning at this event and worked through the year to produce Every Woman's Right to Learn which is being launched at this event.
The gender gap has undoubtedly narrowed since the first International Women's Day in 1911. Women have made gains in many spheres of life - economic, political, health, educational - but there is still much more to do to win full equality. Moreover, in a climate of funding cuts and continuing economic uncertainty, there is a danger that some of this progress, and particularly the essential services that support it, will be lost as the poorest people, families and therefore, women, are hardest hit.
Learning provides a route for women of all ages and backgrounds to find and fulfil their potential, whether it is at work, in their communities, or in discovering a creative talent or passion. It enables them to become leaders, to inspire others, to get things done and make changes in all spheres of life. Learning opens doors to employment, to progress at work, and better paid jobs with better conditions. Many women already benefit from adult learning and we celebrate their achievements. But many still don't participate or have access to the advice, guidance and support they need to take up and get the most out of what's available. You are warmly invited to join us in celebrating women's achievements through learning and building the movement for Every Woman's Right to Learn.
