Training context
Findings from recent research clearly demonstrate that formative assessment approaches are strongly linked to successful and sustainable learning, particularly so for less confident learners and those with unsuccessful or negative previous experiences of learning. The present policy context for adult learning focuses on easily measurable and short term outcomes, often making it harder for teachers and providers to focus on the actual needs of learners and leading to what is known as 'teaching to the test'. The term 'formative assessment' is appearing more and more in policy initiatives, but often teachers and providers are unclear about its meaning and how best to put formative assessment approaches into practice.
This training takes as its starting point a definition of formative assessment not as specific stage within a cycle of assessment, but as a complex and continuous process of activity, reflection, communication and evaluation taking place between teacher and learners and between learners themselves. The outcomes of such a process then lead to the adaptation and refinement of learning activities with the aim of continuously improving learning - the development of learner autonomy is central to the process.
