Background

Qualifications for teaching and supporting disabled learners have been a long time in development. LLUK commissioned NIACE on a number of occasions to research roles and responsibilities in relation to teaching and supporting the learning of disabled learners.

NIACE is pleased that qualifications have now been developed that provide an opportunity to develop teachers'  and learning support practitioners'  knowledge and skills in relation to all disabled learners but also allow for focus on a specialist area of disability.

These qualifications have been very much informed by the sector, for the sector. They include for teachers:

  • a qualification that integrates generic and subject specific content - the qualification for teaching disabled learners is partly integrated where the first half of the qualification focuses on the specialism and the second part is generic
  • a qualification that provides training only for teaching disabled learners -this typeis often referred to as a standalone qualification. A teacher must hold or gain a generic teaching qualification in addition to this to work in the FE sector in England.

For learning support practitioners:

  • ALevel 3 Certificate in Learning Support (Disabled learners)

The qualifications both for teaching and supporting disabled learners are underpinned by an application of the professional standard. These documents detail the knowledge skills and understanding expected of all teachers and learning support staff specialising in working with disabled learners. Awarding organisations and their centres use these documents to inform the content of their qualifications and programmes.
