Background

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) £210 million Informal Adult and Community Learning (IACL) funding was protected in the spending review settlement, and BIS is currently reviewing this fund. The overall purpose of BIS funded IACL will be to support flexible, innovative informal adult learning that develops social and economic capital at an individual, family and community level and supports the development of the Big Society. A priority will be to engage and motivate the most ‘disadvantaged’ adults. In line with the government’s localism agenda, the balance of national policy objectives and local decision making and planning, informed by, and accountable to, local people will be considered. There is also an intention to develop more robust approaches to collecting evidence and measuring individual and community impact.

BIS will publish a consultation on Informal Adult and Community Learning in early Summer which will inform policy and funding proposals that will be announced in Autumn 2011. NIACE is running a parallel project producing materials to support citizens, including learners, to take part in the consultation. The policy seminar on the afternoon of Tuesday 19 July 2011 is fully booked.  Due to the overwhelming interest, an additional session will be held in the morning.  The seminar will provide a briefing on the proposals and opportunities for organisations to work together to identify and formulate responses to the proposals.

Aims

This seminar aims to:

• brief participants on the content and implications of the BIS adult and community learning consultation
• provide an opportunity for providers to identify and share potential opportunities and problematic areas in the proposals and to formulate responses
• introduce materials developed to encourage and support citizens to take part in this consultation.

All providers who offer or have an interest in Adult and Community Learning including FE colleges, local authorities, third sector organisations and trade unions.

Event Information

Arrival and registration is at 10:20am for a 10:40am start. The event will end at 12:45pm

Event fee per person: £85 (includes sandwich lunch, tea/coffee and a copy of the materials)
NB: NIACE does not charge VAT on conference or course fees

Only online application forms with the payments section completed will be processed.
NB: If you wish us to invoice your employer we require a copy of the Purchase Order before the form is processed

Places will be allocated in order of receipt of completed online application forms (one online application form per person)

Video cameras may be in use at this event. If you do not wish to be photographed or appear on the video outputs please indicate this on the application form and make yourself known at registration

Participants should be prepared to take their own notes as there will not be handouts for all sessions

Cancellations are non-refundable.

The full fee is payable prior to the event

Substitutions are to be advised 5 working days prior to the event.

A 15 working days notice period is required for provision of electronic note-takers, sign language interpreters and transcription to Braille

Application forms are individually acknowledged by e-mail.

Joining instructions, including map and directions, will be e-mailed out one week before the event.
