Background

What can we learn from the use of technology for Informal Adult Learning?

How do we secure a learning offer which ensures that adults get the real benefits of the digital world?

As we enter the second decade of the twenty first century, digital technologies are playing a growing role in our lives and in our learning. The Independent Inquiry into the Future of Lifelong Learning recognised the need for a citizens’ curriculum with particular acknowledgement of the importance of digital skills, to enable people to adapt to change, understand change and to be empowered to shape change.

This conference invites presenters and delegates to enter into a dialogue over what such a curriculum should mean for citizens, learners and for teachers. This dialogue can be located in the wider landscape described by the recent Harnessing Technology research, which continues to provide insights into the ‘corporate capabilities’ of learning organisations to embrace good use of technology.

Aims

The event is intended to support participants in developing their own professional practice whilst also providing a focus for contributions to their organisations’ vision of how adults as learners can benefit most from the application of technology.

This should help participants in both the delivery of their programmes and the framing of strategic planning and funding applications.

Audience

Policy makers, practitioners and managers in any organisation involved in offering structured or unstructured learning for adults.

NB: The Learning Revolution White Paper devoted a whole chapter to the value of Technology and Broadcasting for informal adult learning. This event will be a timely opportunity to understand how this is being interpreted in communities by drawing on the experiences of the Learning Transformation Fund.

Programme

08:30 - 09:30 Breakfast seminar

You can select one of these optional breakfast seminars where we will mix coffee and croissants with facts and opinions. Please indicate your choice on the application form.

Community Reporters (Session 1)
Gary Copitch, Chief Executive, People's Voice Media

A voice to be reckoned with?
Irrelevant voices with no one listening?

The Transformation Fund projects have shown a burgeoning interest in offering informal learning activities which give people a chance to tell their own stories and the stories of their communities. Are these community reporters contributing to our fund of knowledge of the world or are we setting them up to be ‘famous for only 15 people'? Are we offering skills in use of technology or communication skills which really will influence change?

This is open to anyone awake this early but it will be of special interest to leaders in learning providers which are developing a strategic role in informal learning partnerships.
This is open to all delegates but will be of special interest to people involved in media creation projects.

Using your institution's digital capacity in a strategic partnership (Session 2)
Eta de Cicco, Programme Director, Digital Learning Team, NIACE

New partnerships are emerging for the delivery and strategic coordination of Informal Adult Learning and we know from a recent survey that over 90% of adult learning  providers are reported to be using technology to support their learners. This breakfast discussion will explore how established providers can maximise their existing capacity in digital learning for the strategic support of Informal Adult Learning.
