Background
How can we make adult numeracy or maths learning relevant to everyday life?
Usually, we offer context-based word-problems, but learners often just ignore the context and do not relate the problem to real life.
This highly interactive session explores how conventional literacy practices can present barriers to maths learners, and proposes alternative learning materials and activities which are more relevant to everyday life.
If your phone has an audio-record function, please bring it along!

Target Audience
This half-day training workshop is particularly relevant to:
- Adult numeracy, literacy and ESOL tutors
- Functional Skills tutors
- GCSE Maths tutors[i]
[1] Many colleges are once more offering GCSE Maths to adult learners as an alternative to Functional Maths

Training Aims
Rather than offering “quick fix” solutions, the aims of this reflective and interactive session are:
- To enhance understanding and innovative practice in relating learning to everyday life
- To promote practitioner-research in developing new materials and approaches
_______________________________
Objectives
By the end of the session participants will have:
- Gained an improved understanding of how literacy is used in the maths classroom;
- Recognise why word problems do not always encourage learners to relate learning to everyday life;
- Explore how different genres of written learning materials are associated with different types of classroom activity; and ,
- Take away practical tips for practitioner action research in developing learning materials and activities for the maths classroom.
You have the opportunity to engage with learning materials and reflect on and discuss your own responses.
Audio-recordings from adult numeracy classroom settings will be played to illustrate real learners’ responses to different learning materials and activities.
