Target Audience
The Safeguarding Update comprises two half day programmes (3 hours each)
Safeguarding Update (1) - general update for staff
Safeguarding Update (2) - for staff with Safeguarding responsibilities
Safeguarding Update (1) is appropriate for new staff and for current staff who wish to update on Safeguarding.
Safeguarding Update (2) is an updating session for Designated Persons* / safeguarding teams and other staff with a specific responsibility for Safeguarding within the organisation i.e. Tutorial staff, Welfare staff, HR personnel, SMT and Governors etc.
The training is available for delivery in-house for all staff who come into contact with learners during the course of their work. These programmes can be delivered back to back on the same day, however bespoke options are also possible.

Training context
Over the course of 2012 / 2013 there has been a number of significant changes to vetting and barring of staff within the learning and skills sector. These half day courses updates staff on those changes and how the changes will affect them. It also gives information on staff’s responsibilities with regard to Safeguarding and brings into perspective the new legislation and the “proportionality” that the government was looking for.

Training Aim
- To update all staff on the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and the new vetting and barring systems
- To reflect on current Safeguarding practice across the organisation

Objectives
By the end of the training participants will have:
- increased knowledge of the current DBS procedures
- an understanding of the range of Safeguarding roles and responsibilities within the organisation
- knowledge of relevant agencies outside the organisation e.g. Local Safeguarding Boards
- a clear understanding of their responsibilities regarding Safeguarding
- acknowledged the “learner voice” in Safeguarding policy and practice
The training is delivered by an established and well respected Safeguarding trainer, who has over 30 years experience working in the learning and skills sector as a teacher, manager and staff development trainer.
NIACE certification will be given for attendance at the training which can be used for CPD verification.

Programme Content
Organisations will have the opportunity to discuss the specific programme content direct with the trainer. The training programme might include:
- Updating on the current Safeguarding legislation
- What the legislation means in practice
- Ofsted’s focus with regard to Safeguarding
- Staff responsibilities for Safeguarding
- Safeguarding policies, procedures and systems
- Safeguarding staff and learners
- Learner voice in Safeguarding and keeping Safeguarding “live” within the organisation
- E safety / E responsibility
- The Designated Person* (Officer) job role and responsibilities
- The DP interface within the organisation and externally with other agencies
- Regulated activity, DBS checks and risk assessment
There will be time and opportunity to ask questions and clarify Safeguarding issues throughout the programme.
* named safeguarding person who has a key role in dealing with any safeguarding concerns/ allegations and liaises with external agencies.
