Background
SROI is an approach to understanding and managing the impacts of a project, organisation or policy. It expresses value in financial terms to reflect the important impacts identified by stakeholders to identify what is important to them.
Capturing social value is high on the policy agenda and is specifically important to adult learning providers in the changing financial context. SROI is one model for considering this and provides a framework to structure thinking and understanding. It's a story not a number. The story should show how you understand the value created, manage it and how you evidence it.
The benefits of SROI include:
- A consistent and clear approach to understanding and reporting on the changes caused by an organisation; resulting in:
- Better organisations, with better strategies, systems and accountability; and
- Organisations that are more able to manage risks, identify opportunities and raise finance required to achieve their mission or strategy.
This training course is designed to be taken as 2 days together. It provides an essential guide to completing an SROI analysis, however, it does not provide accredited practitioner status. No prior experience is needed. A further course will be available for delegates wishing to progress further.
The programme is delivered by the SROI Network and NIACE in partnership with LSIS*.
Target Audience
Practitioners, managers and adult learning and skills professionals who want to learn how to use the SROI methodology.
*You can use your LSIS account to part pay 50% of this course subject to available credit. For more information, please see the Event Information section at the bottom of this page.
Training Content
Both training days will be contextualised for adult learning and skills
DAY 1 is a practical, step-by-step introduction to the SROI process.
It begins with some theory but the process is best learnt by trying it, so trainees will learn how to develop an impact map - the heart of the SROI process - and explore the processes using an example appropriate to each trainee:
Introduction and principles of SROI
Working with impact maps -all the principles and stages 1-5 explored by individual exercises:
Principles
1. Involve stakeholders
2. Understand what changes
3. Value the things that matter
4. Only include what is material
5. Do not overclaim
6. Be transparent
7. Verify the results
Stages
1. Establishing scope & identifying key stakeholders
2. Mapping outcomes
3. Evidencing outcomes and giving them a value
4. Establishing impact
5. Calculating the SROI
DAY 2 covers, through group exercises and discussion, stage 6 and issues that practitioners will need to demonstrate an understanding of if they wish to become accredited.
Although designed with the assurance process in mind, this course is suitable for anyone wanting more than just an introduction to SROI. Current issues will be discussed, best practice and techniques shared and examples explored.
