Why is this event so important and why is it being held now

In November 2010, the Department for Business Innovation and Skills published their implementation plan for the Sustainable Skills Strategy. In paragraph 47 of “Investing in Skills for Sustainable Growth”, the proposed changes to ALS funding are outlined:

‘ Additional Learning Support, including Additional Social Needs / Additional Learner Needs funding in Apprenticeships, provides direct support for FE colleges and training organisations to enable them to help learners access, progress towards and successfully achieve their learning goals. The need for ALS may arise from a learning difficulty and / or disability, or from support required to access a progression opportunity or employment, or from literacy, numeracy or language support requirements. From the 2011/12 academic year, we propose to align the current different approaches for ALS across funding streams in line with the move to a single Adult Skills Budget.’

Audience

The members of the NW ALS Network include senior managers and managers with the responsibility for Additional Learning Support and colleagues who are responsible for the administration associated with ALS funding. This event will focus on the changes in funding for General FE colleges and Sixth Form Colleges. The event will be open to other NW providers who are not members of the NW network but they should be aware that the focus will be on General FE Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges.
