Training Aim
This practical and interactive one day training session aims to equip you with an improved understanding of mental health issues relating to young people, as well as a range of practical teaching and learning strategies to help you provide effective support to young people with mental health conditions in your organisation.

Training Context
Young people often hear the cliché, 'You’ve got your whole life ahead of you', but the quality of that whole life ahead can largely be determined by the experiences young people have in the transitional years between childhood and adulthood: a time when they may well be engaged with Further Education.
Robust evidence exists to suggest links between mental health difficulties and social exclusion, leading to poor education and employment opportunities, and financial, social and health inequalities. In addition to this, the numbers of young people experiencing mental health difficulties appear to be increasing at alarming rates, which can often see them requiring support to achieve in or sustain their learning:
- Mental health conditions in young people increased by 70 % between 1999 and 2004 (Warwick et al 2006)
- 10 % of 16 – 25 year olds in 2009 thought that life was not worth living (The Prince’s Trust 2009)
- One in three unemployed young people in 2010 feel down or depressed most of the time (The Prince’s Trust 2010).
- 10-13% of 15-16 year olds have self harmed (The Prince’s Trust, 2010).
This training session and core resources have been shaped by knowledge and expertise gained by the NIACE/LSC/Inclusion Institute Partnership Programme, which has come from associates with several years experience in the fields of mental health, learning and skills, and employment support, along with the good practice and expertise owned by networks of practitioners and learners across the English regions. The training session’s activities will draw on extracts from the North West LSC Young People’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Awareness Resource. **
If you are committed and passionate about ensuring that young people with mental health difficulties enjoy and get the most from their learning, then the A Whole Life Ahead training session will allow you to explore and share ideas for good practice in your organisation.

What this training session will do
By the end of the training session you will have:
- examined the social context of young people’s mental health and wellbeing experiences;
- increased your awareness and understanding of topical issues such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and self-harm;
- identified a range of practical teaching and learning strategies to support young people in their organizations; and,
- explored some of the practical applications of the North West LSC Young People’s Mental Health Awareness Resource in the context of Young People’s wellbeing and Further Education, allowing you to better introduce its use in your organisation.
On completion of the A Whole Life Ahead session you will receive a copy of the resource** on CD for use back in your own organisation.
**The North West LSC Young People’s Mental Health Awareness resource was developed as a workforce development tool and comprises a series of 12 modules on a variety of sector-responsive topics. Each module contains a session plan and a number of creative and energizing activities to assist practitioners to consider the issue from different perspectives - a young person’s point of view, the surrounding policy context, and in application in their own practice.
Organisations can use the modules as 'off the shelf' resources. Each module can be delivered as a standalone staff training session or as part of a course to support Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
