Professor Stephen McNair

Stephen McNair is Director of CROW

He has spent most of his career in adult, further and higher education. In the 1980s he created and ran a Government funded national research agency (UDACE), in the 1990s he was Director of Research at the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), and a Higher Education Adviser to the Department for Education and Skills. For five years he was Head of the School of Educational Studies at the University of Surrey, and during 2004-5 he was a Head of School at the NHS University.

He is currently a member of the Surrey Local Learning and Skills Council. In the past he has chaired the Strategic Policy Committee of the Universities Association for Adult Continuing Education, and been a member of the Workforce Skills Committee of the South East England Development Agency, the Cabinet Office's Academic Advisory Committee on the National Skills Strategy, the Widening Participation Committee of the Higher Education Funding Council, the National Advisory Group on Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning, and the National Guidance Council. He has worked as a consultant for OECD, University for Industry and the BBC.

Research Interests: His research interests focus on the older workforce, and the relationship between learning and work.
