Conference: Managing the Older Workforce in Health and Social Care Monday 20 June 2005, London
The health and social care services face growing skill gaps and shortages. The workforce is ageing, and the numbers of new recruits do not match the numbers retiring, many of them early. The problem is particularly severe in the South East where a strong economy is pushing up pay and living costs, making public sector work uncompetitive.
One solution to the problem would be to persuade older staff to stay longer. However, we know relatively little about older people's attitudes to work, and about ways of organising work which would make it more attractive. While Government is encouraging people to stay in work longer (age discrimination becomes illegal next year) and there have been retention initiatives in the NHS, real retirement ages are not rising.
The event was jointly organised by CROW and NIACE, at the request of the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), which has identified health and social care as a priority sector for development in the South East (Kent, Surrey , Sussex , Hampshire, Berkshire , Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire).
The conference was organised to bring together professionals from a wide range of backgrounds to learn about and share ideas on these issues.

CROW Spring Conference, 11 April 2005: The Ageing Workforce in the South East: what next?
The South East is experiencing growing skills shortages, as more people retire, and fewer young people are entering work. Employers are losing experience and knowledge which they cannot replace. This constraint on economic growth is particularly serious in this region.
Government would like people to stay in work longer, but we do not know a lot about what older people feel about this, what training they might need, and how employers might modify their working practices to make work more attractive to older people.
CROW was created to study these issues, and help SEEDA, employers, and
education and training providers to respond. Over the last two years we
have learned a good deal about the attitudes of individuals and employers
to work in later life, but there is a long way to go before we are making
full use of the talents of all people over 50.
This conference aims to bring together professionals from a wide range of backgrounds to learn about and share ideas on these issues.

'Prospering With An Ageing Workforce'
On 22 April the CBI, in collaboration with Cripps Harries Hall, a South East law firm, and the Centre for Research into the Older Workforce, held a seminar at the University of Surrey for senior executives of companies in the South East. The seminar discussed the background of an ageing workforce, the related labour market trends and the implications of the age discrimination legislation which will come into force in October 2006.
The slides presented at the seminar can be found below:
- Understanding the Older Workforce, Professor Stephen McNair (CROW)
- Age Discrimination Policies, Simon Kerr-Davies (Cripps, Harries Hall)
- Older workers at Tesco, Mark Roberts (Group Benefits Manager)
