Unravelling Workforce Discrimination in the South East of England
A project to examine a range of forms of discrimination in the workforce of the South East. Project led by Kingston University. CROW’s role was to provide input on the age discrimination issues.
Aims
- To investigate the key issues of employment discrimination facing older workers, black and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities from an institutional and individual point of view.
- To map discrimination incidences, by sector and target group across the South East.
- To deliver a 3 year action plan aimed at all stakeholder institutions in the South East
Outcomes
- To produce maps of the location and frequency of discrimination in the region, highlighting 'hot spots' and 'cold spots'
- 3 dissemination events.
- Full report of findings and 3 year strategy plan.
Methodology
- Gathering secondary data from organisations on discrimination incidents, mapped against demographic and labour market information to plot 'hot spots'
- Review policy and research literature
- Questionnaire survey of 900 individuals, both employed and unemployed.
- In-depth analysis of 90 individuals from the target groups using 12 target group members as co-ordinators, self-monitoring techniques, interviews and focus groups.
- Questionnaire survey of 500 businesses in the SE.
- In depth analysis of 50 firms based on an interview with manager/CEO and HR people together, and 5 round tables.
- 3 awareness raising events for minimum of 50 people.
The project was completed in March 2005.
