NIACE has produced a series of leaflets for people experiencing mental health difficulties to help them make choices about taking up learning and choices to make regarding learning.

What are we aiming to achieve?

To date three leaflets have been produced:-

You Can Do It' - Have you thought about going back to learning?

Should I Say? - A short guide for learners about disclosing mental health difficulties

Should I Say? -  A detailed guide for learners about disclosing mental health difficulties

These leaflets aim to help learners consider whether they might want to take up adult learning to enhance their lives, whether they want to disclose a mental health difficulty to their learning provider and,  if so, how to go about this.

How will we do this work?

These leaflets have been produced with the help of learners, for learners.

Who is this work for?

These leaflets are aimed at adults experiencing mental health difficulties and will help them think carefully about taking up learning and disclosing mental health difficulties.

What is coming next?

We are keen to receive feedback from practitioners, providers and learners about how they have used these leaflets and whether they are helpful.  We are also keen to get ideas about other topics for future leaflets to add to the series.

Email your feedback and ideas to caroline.law@niace.org.uk

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

Learners and practitioners have told us the impact these leaflets have had:

"The new leaflets for learners are excellent - particularly the preparation for disclosure information around diagnosis, etc.  We are always looking at ways to encourage disclosure and think that these will be really useful."

"Your leaflets whilst designed for people considering going back to learning, addressed many of the issues that are encountered by my clients when entering employment, i.e. disclosure, support available, lack of confidence.  The information is clear and honest.  I would have no hesitation in encouraging customers to read it."

"I think they are excellent - very clear language and encouraging messages."
