Adult Tutor writing on Flipchart Adult Learning Workforce

NIACE is committed to more, different and better adult learning. Training and development for the adult learning workforce is vital to achieving better learning for adults.

Who's who in the adult learning workforce?

Most people working in adult learning are in a teaching role, and many work part-time. Teachers may be employed by local authorities, further education colleges, private training providers or third sector organisations. Other roles are also important, particularly in relation to informal adult learning and initiatives that are designed to engage new adult learners from excluded groups. Community outreach workers, learning champions and facilitators of self organised groups all have important roles to play here.  Some of these wider roles may be played by volunteers.  Larger organisations, such as local authorities, employ people in a range of coordinating and managerial roles concerned with adult learning.

NIACE has a number of projects relating to the adult learning workforce and also runs a  range of training events which contribute to the continuing professional development of teachers of adults.  You can find further details at http://www.niace.org.uk/services/training
