Since it became widely available, broadcast media has been an essential tool for millions of adult learners; most notably the Open University and Moving On.

NIACE's work with the broadcast media involves partnership working with BBC, Channel 4 and Ofcom. NIACE was a key part of the Ofcom-convened Media Literacy Task Group in the run-up to the publication of the Digital Britain White Paper in the summer of 2009 and is currently serving on the Digital Participation Consortium to develop a National Plan for Digital Participation and an associated social marketing and outreach campaign.

Since 2005 NIACE has held an Annual Media Literacy Conference, with support from Ofcom, where leading figures from Government and Industry discuss the latest developments and future strategies. Knowledge cafes featuring adult learning providers is a great opportunity for colleagues to discuss potential activities to help adults become more media literate.

NIACE has also taken steps to create its own media. Nothing captures the transformational power of learning better than listening to a learner speaking about their experiences.

Nearly 50 Podcasts have been produced featuring, mostly, learners' voices, alongside adult learning policy issues and developments. These podcasts have been downloaded over 63,000 times.
