change Informal Adult Learning

Informal adult learning is an umbrella term describing a broad range of learning that brings together adults, to pursue an interest, address a need, acquire a new skill, become healthier or learn how to support their children.

This kind of learning, usually unaccredited, is an important part of the wider learning continuum. It can be undertaken for its own sake or as a step towards other learning/training. It can be delivered by providers in the public, voluntary or private sector. It can also be organised by people for themselves through the many groups, clubs and societies where people get together to learn.

NIACE has supported the government in developing range of resources to help to provide the kind of environment where informal learning can flourish.

Directory of Resources

Many different individuals and organisations are actively involved in informal learning. You might be supported by public funds, employed by a private business, lead a self-organised group or work for a voluntary organisation.

These resources will help you develop, deliver and/or support informal learning in places like libraries, museums, community centres, unionlearn centres, extended schools, children's centres, colleges and workplaces.

A full directory of all the resources produced to support informal learning is available on the Excellence Gateway.
