Introduction
We know that around 1 in 6 adults in England have difficulties with everyday reading and writing. Improving this situation is vital for everyone in our society. NIACE is particularly concerned that good quality literacy-learning is available to adults regardless of their status, disability or learning difficulty, age race or ethnicity, including adults with skills at entry level 2 and below.
Our work on literacy development is usually a part of wider literacy, language and numeracy or workplace learning projects, because literacy is integral to so many other aspects of learning.
What is Literacy?
Literacy is the ability to read and write, to express ideas and opinions, to make decisions and solve problems, to use information and digital technologies, as individual family members, workers and citizens.
Work Society and Lifelong Literacy: a national inquiry into literacy learning
NIACE held an independent Inquiry into Adult and Youth Literacy in England, which invited evidence from employers, policy-makers, practitioners and learners. This report is now available
