NIACE has a long, established history in working with unions, including Unionlearn and Unison. We work closely with unions and Union Learning Rep (ULRs) to develop and support Skills for Life in the workplace through a variety of activities.

Our work includes:

  • Events to share effective practice in workplace learning, including the role of Union Learning Reps (ULRs) 
  • a joint Lifeline: Working with Unions to Develop Literacy, Language and Numeracy in the Workplace
  • Fast Facts booklets for specific job roles developed and published jointly with Unison, RMT (the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers), UCATT (Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians) and ASLEF (the train driver's Union)
  • a project with the FDA to develop a programme of support for members with learning difficulties
  • a continuing professional development module for ULRs on Reading for Pleasure on reading for pleasure in the workplace;
  • developing a short story competition and research into reading in the workplace with First Group and TGWU reps
  • supporting and promoting ULRs to use Quick Reads
  • work with Unite to develop Skills for Life support
  • courses in using plain English for the TGWU (Transport and General Workers Union) ULRs.
