Digital Activist Inclusion Network - DAIN

The Digital Activist Inclusion Network (DAIN) is an exciting volunteer project working across the East Midlands.  DAIN aims to promote digital inclusion by encouraging people to use technology with the help of volunteers (Digital Activists).

Date From/To: 1 June 2009 - 1 May 2012

What are we aiming to achieve?

DAIN is an action research volunteer project part funded by the European Social Fund and designed to develop, test and deliver approaches to challenge the digital divide and help widen participation in employment and learning across the East Midlands.  It is led by the WEA East Midlands.

How will we do this work?

The project will recruit and train at least one hundred digital activists.  They will be supported to engage and work with over 3000 digitally excluded people in the region.  It is transnational and there are two trips to visit other European projects working in a similar way.

The digital activists use a community learning environment created on Moodle and the DAIN website provides regular updates on the progress of the project.

A variety of tools will be developed to support digital engagement with the communities of place, interest and identity targeted by the project.  A regional network will be established to share information, advice and resources.

Who is this work for?

The project’s key purpose is to identify approaches that enable people to begin to use technology effectively to improve their skills for employment and learning.

When will we do this work?

The project is designed to recruit new digital activists and train them during the first two years of the project.

What is coming next?

In the final year of the project, there will be a focus on disseminating experience at local, regional and national level.

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

The work will raise levels of ‘digital participation', by providing new and flexible opportunities for adults to develop skills in the use of the online world.
