E-Guides eCPD Online

The E-Guides eCPD programme trained teachers of adults to make good use of technology in their teaching and to cascade their learning to colleagues.

The programme was an introduction for post-16 practitioners to e-learning and using technology effectively in teaching and learning. It made a major contribution to the e-maturity of organisations in Personal Development and Community Learning (formerly known as ACL - Adult and Community Learning), Work-Based Learning, Voluntary and Community Sector and Offender Learning and Skills.

Date From/To: 7 September 2009 - 31 March 2010

What are we aiming to achieve?

The project aimed to raise the quality of learning experiences for adult learning through upskilling teaching staff to use technology in inspirational ways.

The E-Guides Training Programme aimed to increase the use of e-learning through developing the skills and knowledge of E-Guides so they were able to support colleagues from all subjects in their use of technology in teaching and learning. Over the years the programme evolved in response to sector demands and funding needs. In the academic year 2009/10, funded by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS), it became part of the eCPD programme along with the Professional Development Advisers (PDAs) eCPD programme and was renamed E-Guide eCPD.  Changes were also made to the delivery model. The three day face-to-face delivery was adapted to provide a blended approach using online delivery supported by facilitators and the use of a virtual classroom.

The E-Guide programme was designed to help support practitioners fulfil the Institute for Learning (IfL) 30-hour (or pro-rata) CPD requirements, engage and improve learning employability skills and deliver new demand-led markets.

Building on the success of the blended 2009 - 2010 delivery, in March 2010 NIACE were contracted by LSIS to adapt the remaining E-Guides materials so the whole E-Guides eCPD programme could be accessed as online modules of learning. The new materials had been written with an expectation that E-Guides would be provided with organisational support throughout the programme.

The E-Guides eCPD Online materials can be accessed by logging in as a 'Guest' on the NIACE Moodle.

How will we do this work?

Following the large scale national face to face training programme the materials were made available online for local providers to access to train their own staff.

Who is this work for?

The work was planned and delivered to benefit adult learners.

What is coming next?

The programme is now available online for any provider to deliver locally but NIACE is available to offer consultancy on how to run your own local E-Guides course. The contact details are below.

What have we accomplished to date?

2992 E-Guides were trained face to face and took on the role of cascading their skills to colleagues.

The acclaimed programme was developed and managed by NIACE from 2004 and in total, over 3,000 E-Guides were trained.

What have we learnt from this work?

Our work showed us how high quality training really can make a difference at the front line.

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

Our Harnessing Technology surveys showed how uptake of technology grew consistently following the start of the E-Guide programme.
