The project aims to raise awareness of the benefits of learning in care settings and encourage and support public, private and voluntary sector care providers to extend and enhance learning opportunities for older people in care settings.
Enhancing Informal Adult Learning for Older People in Care Settings
This project arose out of The Learning Revolution white paper, where the Government made a specific commitment to take action to improve informal learning opportunities for older people in a range of care settings – residential home, day care, care in the home, and in supported housing – in England.
What are we aiming to achieve? How will we do this work? This work will be done by identifying a range of current practices in offering learning opportunities for older people across care settings, drawing out the challenges and opportunities for policy and practice from existing practice and developing practical guidance to support care providers. Who is this work for?Key stakeholders in the education and care sectors including local authorities, learning providers, care managers and care staff. What have we accomplished to date?We have established a virtual stakeholder group of key agencies and individuals across England with an interest and role to play in enhancing learning opportunities for older people in care. The interim report, published on 1st October 2009 to coincide with the International Day of Older Persons, which identifies a range current practices and highlights the challenges and opportunities for policy. We have developed a resource pack of support materials for local authorities, education providers, care managers and care staff. These are available in hard copy and online. What is (or will be) the impact of this work? This project seeks to impact education and social care policy in enhancing IAL opportunities for older people in care settings. The interim report, published in October 2009, sought to identify a number of policy challenges and the resource materials produced aim to assist local authorities in developing local policy and provision in this area. A high profile reception, held in London 24th February 2010, with Estelle Morris and Kevin Brennan as well as key organisations in the sector aimed to provide a launch pad for further work.
