Supporting the provision of training for unemployed adult learners

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has commissioned NIACE to undertake exploratory research into the provision of training for unemployed adults to identify practice that is both effective for learners and helpful in supporting providers adjusting to the new approach outlined in the Government's Skills Strategy, 'Skills for Sustainable Growth', BIS (2010).

Date From/To: 14 February 2011 - 31 March 2013

What are we aiming to achieve?

This project will research training provision for unemployed adults, with a view to holding events and publishing resources that will inform and support increased involvement in this area of work.

How will we do this work?

Building on the work we undertook last year to support providers delivering skills provision for unemployed adults, we have recently issued:

A call for information on approaches to the delivery of discrete and embedded English and maths provision for unemployed adults; and

A call for information on partnership approaches involving employers to support young people, not in education, employment or training (NEET) aged 19 to 24.

Please contact robert.gray@niace.org.uk or call him on 0116 2042801, if you deliver provision for unemployed adults and/or young people NEET aged 19 to 24 through the Adult Skills Budget and you have other effective practice that you would like to share with us.

Who is this work for?

This project will benefit unemployed adults and learning providers by identifying helpful strategies and approaches through which training for unemployed adults may be provided in the future.

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

The project will help learning providers to design and deliver vocational training for adults by:

  • disseminating helpful practice developed during recent skills programmes offering flexible, short focused courses
  • describing how providers can utilise their new flexibilities to more effectively align provision to provide learners with labour market relevant skills
  • identifying how funding from a single adult skills budget might allow a more joined up service for the learner both before and following employment
