The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has commissioned NIACE to undertake exploratory research into the provision of training for unemployed adults to identify practice that is both effective for learners and helpful in supporting providers adjusting to the new approach outlined in the Government's Skills Strategy, 'Skills for Sustainable Growth', BIS (2010).

Date From/To: 14 February 2011 - 31 March 2012

What are we aiming to achieve?

How will we do this work?

Having identified the major challenges for providers through our survey of providers delivering skills provision for unemployed adults, we are now researching effective practice that can help providers to overcome some of these challenges. Please contact robert.gray@niace.org.uk or call him on 0116 2042780, if you deliver provision for unemployed adults and/or young people NEET aged 19 to 24 through the Adult Skills Budget and you have effective practice that you would like to share with us in relation to:

  • micro-business employer engagement
  • building and maintaining learner commitment, motivation and aspirations as a means of supporting and managing unemployed adult and young people NEET learners exhibiting challenging behavior

You may also with to join us at a forthcoming seminar on 1st February on 'Skills provision for unemployed adults - its delivery and impact'.

Who is this work for?

This project will benefit unemployed adults and learning providers by identifying helpful strategies and approaches through which training for unemployed adults may be provided in the future.

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

The project will help learning providers to design and deliver vocational training for adults by:

  • disseminating helpful practice developed during recent skills programmes offering flexible, short focused courses
  • describing how providers can utilise their new flexibilities to more effectively align provision to provide learners with labour market relevant skills
  • identifying how funding from a single adult skills budget might allow a more joined up service for the learner both before and following employment
