Mid-life Career Review

The Mid-life Career Review is a 15 month project to develop and test different models of mid-life career review. The models are being piloted and evaluated to find out which approaches are most effective and for which client groups. The project will develop a range of materials for careers guidance practitioners to use with this age group.

Date From/To: 1 January 2013 - 31 March 2014

What are we aiming to achieve?

The project is exploring how mid-life career reviews could contribute to the Government’s extending working lives agenda.

We’re all going to be working for longer, may want more fulfilling work, prefer a flexible retirement or we may have caring responsibilities or health issues.  The Midlife Career Review will give individuals an opportunity to take stock, review their options and plan their future.

Working with a wide range of organisations in different settings across England, the project is exploring whether there is a demand for a mid-life career review and how it could be rolled out.  Different models of mid-life career review are being piloted and evaluated.

Resources for careers guidance practitioners to use with this age group are being developed.

How will we do this work?

Models for mid-life career reviews are being developed, promoted and piloted through a variety of agencies across England. These are the National Careers Service prime contractors as well as a number of other organisations providing IAG.  The different review models’ operations, costs and impacts will be evaluated and a final report produced for Government and the National Careers Service. Materials for careers guidance practitioners to use with this age group will also be developed.

Who is this work for?

People in mid-life who may have around 20 years of working life ahead of them.

Guidance practitioners and others involved in the provision of information, advice and guidance to people who may have 20 or more years of working life ahead of them.

When will we do this work?

This is a 15-month project that started in January 2013 and ends in March 2014. The piloting phase will be from May 2013 to November 2013

What is coming next?

In March 2014 there will be a conference and report to share the findings of the project which will include recommendations about what the next steps should be to provide the opportunity for people in midlife to review their situation and make plans for an active future.

What have we accomplished to date?

  • Eighteen partners have been recruited
  • 2 Project workshops have taken place
  • Research and evaluation strategy has been developed

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

    • Workshops and briefings for advisers, contractors and other stakeholders including ‘signposters’ and referral agencies.
