Online Learning Matters

Following the development and delivery of NIACE's initial online courses, an opportunity was realised to bring together the lessons learnt from the development of online courses and learning platform projects, and to deliver this as a comprehensive publication with an optional one-day training event to highlight the publication.  This project provided organisations with a comprehensive basis for the development of online learning courses within their own organisation.

Date From/To: 1 February 2008 - 31 March 2009

What are we aiming to achieve?

This project aimed to develop a comprehensive publication that reflected outstanding practice in the use of online learning within teaching and learning in the Further Education system; providing practical consideration on how to develop online learning with an optional one day face-to-face training day to highlight the publication.

The training day aimed to guide and support participants to explore online learning opportunities and develop a practical plan for providing learning online themselves.

How will we do this work?

The project involved an element of research into what providers specifically needed to support them in developing their own online learning provision.  This was followed by the publication Online Learning Matters and three training days across England.  An area was created on the NIACE Moodle for all participants of the training events to provide them with an opportunity to network and share their ongoing experiences in online learning.

Who is this work for?

Post-16 education providers - especially in a community setting - who wanted to develop their own online learning provision.

What have we accomplished to date?

The publication Online Learning Matters, three training events and an online networking area.

What have we learnt from this work?

Although more providers are digitally-aware, the need for guidance and support in creating an online learning provision continues.

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

This project provided support and step-by-step guidance to experts in teaching and learning, who wanted to extend their learning provision to include online or blended learning approaches.
