We aim to explore what specific support is available to BME groups experiencing mental health difficulties and what are some of the barriers they experience in accessing, progressing and achieving in learning.
Engaging Black and Minority Ethnic Communities
This project looks at some of the issues faced by adults from Black and Minority Ethnic Communities (BME) experiencing mental health difficulties in accessing, progressing and achieving in learning.
This information will be used to develop a guidance pack for Community Development Workers, Support Workers, Carers, Mentors and others offering support to BME adults within the mental health care system.
What are we aiming to achieve? How will we do this work? The project is supported by three external Consultants who are 'experts by experience' and Community Development Workers. Their role includes producing case studies, critical reading, support with the focus groups and informing the design and content of the guidance. Who is this work for?Community Development Workers, Support Workers, Carers, Mentors and others offering support to BME adults within the mental health care system. What have we accomplished to date?So far we have had an initial meeting with the consultancy group, completed most of the desk research and conducted one focus group. What have we learnt from this work?Delivering Race Equality Report - [PDF] - A report from a project that took place in London for Delivering Race Equality. It audited Early Intervention caseloads and looked at the education and employment rates of Service Users from Black and Minority Ethnic communities and also looked at the impact of culturally sensitive provision at FE colleges for Service Users from BME communities. What is (or will be) the impact of this work?We hope the guidance produced from this research will enable frontline staff to support and encourage BME adults experiencing mental health difficulties in their learning ambitions.
