Using the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) within the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)

This work commissioned from NIACE by the Skills Funding Agency involves researching how providers are making use of the facility to offer the recognition of prior learning (RPL) within the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

Date From/To: 1 October 2012 - 1 July 2013

What are we aiming to achieve?

This research aims to identify good and innovative provider and awarding organisation (AO) practice in offering RPL as well as some of the barriers to providers and AOs in making a substantial RPL offer.

How will we do this work?

The research will involve an on-line provider survey and a small number of follow up research interviews with providers and awarding organisations. The survey and interview findings will be analysed and written up in the form of a research report.

Who is this work for?

This research has been commissioned by the Skills Funding Agency.

What have we accomplished to date?

NIACE's report on Using the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) within the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) was published in April 2013. The report gives a snapshot picture of how providers are making use of the facility to offer RPL within the QCF. The report also describes some of the issues facing providers and awarding organisations offering RPL and includes a number of recommendations of relevance to the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills and to the Skills Funding Agency.

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

The report findings will help inform future Skills Funding Agency policy relating to RPL.
