Working strategically: family learning in museums, libraries and archives

This project builds on NIACE and the Museum Libraries and Archives Council's England-wide work developing networking and delivering training on family learning in museums, libraries and archives.  Focusing on the North East and Yorkshire and Humber regions, networking events provide a shared forum for local authority family learning staff and museum, libraries and archives sector staff with case study exchange to support curriculum development and best practice.

Date From/To: 1 July 2010 - 28 February 2011

What are we aiming to achieve?

We aim to:

  • create a sustainable model of regional family learning work in and with museums, libraries and archives;
  • ensure the continuation of strategic infrastructure;
  • enhance delivery, in particular to those families not generally using museums, libraries and archives; and
  • enable best practice to be shared nationally.

How will we do this work?

We are facilitating network and training events that develop expertise within the sectors to gain the most from current policy priorities, including evidencing impact and setting outcomes for family learning work linked to outcomes for children and other national and local priorities.

Who is this work for?

We are working with many organisations in the North East and Yorkshire and Humber regions, including:

  • Local authority Family Learning staff
  • Children's worker staff
  • Surestart
  • Adult Learning staff
  • Literacy officers
  • Inclusion officers (Local Authorities)
  • Museums, libraries, galleries and archives staff
  • Voluntary and community organisations offering family learning.

When will we do this work?

The project started in July 2010 and will continue until February 2011.

What is coming next?

A series of network and training events are being held between October and December 2010.  See the NIACE events page for details.

What have we accomplished to date?

This work builds on NIACE's previous family learning work with the museums, libraries and archive sector.

What is (or will be) the impact of this work?

By the end of the project, we intend that the networks will have established clear lines for self-sustainability drawing on expertise and commitment from network members.
