Welcome to the e-Learning Exemplars

The good practice examples presented on this website were compiled over a period of three years (2005-2008) from information provided by local authority adult learning services (ACL), work-based learning (WBL) providers and offender learning and skills (OL&S) institutions. The exemplars were produced to show managers the types of e-learning activities that have helped other organisations to progress their e-learning developments.

The examples are particularly helpful in supporting providers in making best use of the e-Learning Positioning Statement (eLPS) tool. The eLPS tool was designed and developed by NIACE in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL) and with the support of the British Educational and Communications Technology Agency (Becta).

The tool asks managers to rate the current stage of e-learning development within their Service or institution using one of six stage descriptors ranging from ‘Not yet started’ to ‘Embedded. Managers can then plan future e-learning activities to move their organisation forward from their current position to the next stage/s.

All the examples have been organised using the same five key e-learning categories as can be found in the eLPS: Vision and Strategic Planning; Teaching and Learning; Staff Development; Infrastructure and Equipment, and finally Managing and Implementing ILT (information and learning technology) /e-Learning. Each category is then sub-divided into a number of elements.

You might find it helpful to download a Word version of the ACL eLPS tool or the OLAS eLPS toolto read alongside the exemplars.

Please note:      Some exemplars can illustrate more than one element across different categories, and where this is the case, are repeated and cross-referenced.
