What does the project do?

The project was developed by the Southend Adult Community College to respond to needs from people attending Mandarin classes programmed by the South East Essex Chinese School.

Parents and their children from the Chinese Community in this area are being invited to take part in the 2 courses that will start in September 2002. The 2 courses are:

bulletMandarin classes for the parents only (parents can gain NCFE accreditation at levels 1 and 2)
bulletTeaching Your Children Basic Mandarin (level 1) has just been accredited by NCFE. Parents and children will work together.

Progress/achievements/interesting developments which are/have taken place:

Preparations are being made, specially writing the course (Teaching Your Children Basic Mandarin) and selecting/acquiring specialised resources.

In preparation for the second year of the project, when we expect to be working with other communities, we have started to approach other communities and have been talking to the Hindu Association.

Other information:

In addition, the college offers ESOL classes and the use of all facilities, including the Languages Centre where up to date equipment (there is a computer suite) and specialised resources (books, tapes, videos and CD roms) are available. All courses and accreditation are free of charge.
