Draft response to LSC consultation: comments invited
NIACE has written a draft response to the
Learning and Skills Council's consultation called "Successful Participation for
All: Widening Adult Participation Strategy".
Any comments you would like to make about the draft NIACE response should be
sent to Sue Cara, Director Programmes and Policy, at NIACE on
sue.cara@niace.org.uk to arrive with
us no later than Tuesday, 6 May 2003, as we will be submitting our final
response on Wednesday 7 May.
The provisional dates for Adult Learners' Week 2004 are
15 - 21 May 2004. Please put these dates in your diaries now.
Further details will appear on this website in due course.
Following bidding for ACLF under Round 6, which funds projects for up to two
years until March 2004, no further bidding rounds have been planned pending
decisions on the future of the ACLF. The Department for Education and Skills is
consulting its national partners and Ministers on this, and expects to be able
to make an announcement later this year. This information, when known, will be
put on the ACLF pages on the NIACE
website.

Homelessness-5 June 2003 Tackling homelessness is more than putting a roof
over people’s heads. The homelessness sector aims to promote active
citizenship, development of skills and opportunities and the
promotion of physical, mental and emotional well-being of people who
are homeless. This conference aims to enhance collaboration and
partnership working between the homelessness and education sectors.

Socrates Grundtvig
Briefing Seminars- 19 May 2003
These seven briefing seminars will provide
information about how to take part in GRUNDTVIG, the action within
the SOCRATES European Education and Training Programme which is
exclusively concerned with adult learning and is open to everyone
engaged in non-formal and formal Adult Education. The GRUNDTVIG
programme is designed to enhance adult learning and encourage
European co-operation.

Basic Skills - and
now what?- 19 May 2003
This is the third annual conference for basic skills
practitioners that NIACE and NATFHE have organised. Each of the
previous events has been a great success. This conference is
designed to give basic skills teachers, tutors, organisers and
managers an opportunity to come together and discuss the various
strands and aspects of the Government adult basic skills strategy in
a critical but constructive manner. The theme of this year's event
is to explore how the basic skills strategy fits into the new wider
Success for All strategy for further education announced at the end
of 2002.

Projects / Research
NIACE Evaluation Of LSC Funded Family Programmes NIACE was commissioned by the Learning and Skills
Council (LSC) in summer 2002 to undertake an evaluation of LSC
funded family programmes. Family programmes covers ‘family literacy,
language and numeracy’ and ‘wider family learning’. The evaluation
concluded and reported to the LSC at the end of March 2003.
The executive summary and final report are available now to
download. A number of regional events to disseminate and consult on
the findings and recommendations of the research are being held in

Extending the
Scope of LSC Performance Review
The LSC Performance Review for LEAs begins in October 2003, but LEAs
can opt in to a Review in April if they wish. NIACE and the
LSC are holding a series of seminars to help LEAs decide a) whether
or to opt in and b) to support those who do.
