Dyslexia Research

NIACE and the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) funded by the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit, are conducting research into the teaching and learning approaches used with dyslexic learners in adult literacy, language and numeracy provision.

The project is entitled "Research into the teaching and learning approaches used with dyslexic learners in adult literacy, numeracy and ESOL provision".  It is in 3 stages, and is scheduled for completion by March 2004, with the LSDA leading the research stage through to March 2003.

The project will produce a framework for further qualitative and quantitative research by the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy. It seeks to clarify for the adult literacy, language and numeracy field the key ways of thinking about dyslexia and the key elements of the different ways of supporting dyslexic learners to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. The project will provide support for tutors in selecting, using and monitoring the effectiveness of different methods/approaches with learners in different contexts and to encourage adult literacy, language and numeracy tutors to explore the field themselves with their learners.

Progress and achievement in non-accredited adult and community learning

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) has published a position paper on the recording and recognition of progress and achievement in non-accredited adult learning. The paper summarises development work undertaken for the LSC by the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) and NIACE on the development of a national approach, and signals the next stages of development work in this field.

The position paper will be of immediate interest to learning and skills providers who offer formal and non-formal adult and community learning provision which does not lead directly to any form of external accreditation, award or qualification. It also has relevance in a wide range of learning and skills contexts across the sector.

Central to the approach proposed is a defined staged process which providers will be expected to have in place through which learners’ progress and achievement are identified and recorded. The development of a national approach to validating the robustness of the systems providers have in place to support this process is the second strand of the development work. Both strands of the LSC’s approach will involve demonstration projects and other development activity.

In seeking a national approach to the recognition and recording of progress and achievement in non-accredited learning, the LSC’s priority is to improve for learners the quality of the learning experience and of the outcomes resulting from participation in learning. The Council will work with providers to ensure that the systems they have in place are robust and inspire confidence. Learners themselves and those who facilitate and support their learning should be better able to identify and value progress and achievement in learning. This should also be more evident to other stakeholders.

The position paper also makes reference to:
