Deadline extended for ALW awards.The deadline for the 2002 Adult Learners' Week awards has been extended by one week to Friday, 18 January 2002. So there is still time to nominate a learner or group of learners who could win anything up to £500. For organisations offering creative learning opportunities for adults there’s a top prize of £5,000. David Bell tipped as new leader of OfstedDavid Bell, a senior figure in local government, has been proposed as the new chief inspector of schools in England.The Education Secretary, Estelle Morris, said she was pleased to recommend David Bell for one of the most influential positions in the English state schools system. If the proposal is approved by the Privy Council, Mr Bell will take over in April from the current chief inspector, Mike Tomlinson, who is retiring. Mr Bell, a former primary head teacher, is currently chief executive of Bedfordshire County Council. He has extensive knowledge of education services, having served as director of education and libraries for Newcastle City Council. Estell Morris said:
