Responding to Nick Clegg's speech to the Liberal Democrat Party Conference - held in Liverpool today - during which the Deputy Prime Minister said, ‘when it comes to lasting fairness - education is everything', Alan Tuckett, Chief Executive of NIACE, said:

"It's a fine aspiration as long as there are second, third and fourth chances for everyone to achieve."

"That's why the forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review is so critical. If we want a society where everyone has the chance to take part and if we want an economy where people have the chance to develop the skills needed to meet the 5 million vacancies of the next decade, Nick Clegg is surely right that education is indeed ‘everything' in achieving fairness."

"It's true for children, for young people entering the labour market, for adults throughout their working lives and beyond, as well as for everyone enjoying an extended retirement. This is no time for cutting such opportunities."
