Global Action Week Tuesday, May 4, 2010 - 12:05
NIACE is pleased that Global Action Week - 19-25 April 2010 - has been successful in keeping the ball rolling towards its 1GOAL campaign, to raise awareness and ensure that the 72 million children around the world, who are not in school, gain access to the education which is their right.
As a member of the Global Campaign for Education, NIACE advocates that if the 1GOAL campaign is to achieve its aims, the Education For All goals, which include adults, must also be addressed.
Children get access to school because adults demand and actively seek out opportunities; children stay in school because adults encourage them; children achieve in school because their parents or carers spend time listening to them and supporting them.
NIACE fully supports the Global Campaign for Education's Call for Action in the UK - launched in February 2010 - which draws attention to the global literacy gap. 760 million adults, two thirds of whom are women, lack literacy skills to help support their children and assist economic and community participation of both themselves and their off-spring. We argue that without investment in these significant adult and youth literacy skills, the 1GOAL ambition will remain a dream.
