NIACE is one of 11 partners in a European project called EUSTaCEA - led by AGE Platform Europe - raising awareness of the EU's duty to prevent and tackle the issue of elder abuse, particularly against older women in need of long-term care and assistance

To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Tuesday 15 June 2010, AGE launched a European Charter to prevent elder abuse, which was developed by all partner organisations.

The Charter will be instrumental in achieving policy change at EU and national level to protect older dependent people and in developing European quality standards for long-term care. It will be accompanied by a toolkit - for care providers, policy-makers and older people's organisations - which is currently being developed by the project's partners and will be finalised in November 2010.

Leonora Miles, Programme Director for EUSTaCEA at NIACE, said:

"Being involved in a project like EUSTaCEA is of utmost importance to NIACE. Through AGE's extensive networks and membership we have involved citizens' groups directly in our work, helping us to develop a suitable European strategy."

"NIACE's contribution to date has mainly focussed on our experience in developing toolkits that highlight the important role that learning plays in preventing elder financial abuse. Both the Charter and toolkit will help provide a better quality of care across Europe and will give a voice to older people, making sure that they are heard by the whole of society."
