The NIACE survey of UNISON members and subsequent report, Skilled for Work (2011), showed that a lack of confidence in their own literacy and numeracy skills has stopped 16% of UNISON members (potentially 210,000) from applying for promotion, 14% (potentially 182,000) from taking extra responsibilities at work and 10% (potentially 130,000) from applying for training courses. It also revealed an unmet appetite for learning at work.

Following these findings, NIACE has worked closely with UNISON to develop a range of materials to support learning for UNISON's members, which include Hints and tips for getting a job and a Quick Reads Reading Group Toolkit for ULRs.

Davinder Sandu, UNISON Learning and Workforce Development Officer, said:

"UNISON's partnership with NIACE has been useful in helping to address our members' learning needs. NIACE's research and readability expertise was invaluable in producing a survey which over 27,000 members responded to. UNISON regards NIACE as its critical friend and supporter."
