A new project - Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) - launched by NIACE, will raise awareness of climate change and its implications for individuals, their communities and the planet and will help adults to develop the skills that they need to respond to these implications.

The project - funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) until March 2010 - will be guided by an advisory group and will support adult and community learning and Third Sector learning organisations to develop their ESD provision and practice.

A series of free seminars will take place in November and December in each English region to:

  • raise awareness of ESD policy and practice
  • support organisations in preparation for ESD related changes introduced by Ofsted from September 2009
  • exchange information and good practice
  • establish support networks

ESD will carry out further research into what works in adult learning in terms of sustainability, gather resources and examples of effective practice and host web-based discussions and information sharing.

Jane Ward, NIACE Senior Programme Director, said:

"We must take climate action before it's too late. Now is the time for adult learning to turn its energy and creativity to tackling the huge and urgent challenges of climate change and sustainability. This project offers a valuable opportunity for colleagues to work together to take this work forward."
