NIACE responds to mental health consultation Thursday, October 15, 2009 - 17:16
In responding to the Department of Health's consultation - New Horizons: Towards a shared vision for mental health - NIACE welcomed the consultation's proposals that cross-government cooperation and promotion of equality should form vital elements of the UK's mental health strategy.
In addition, NIACE's response also highlights the benefits lifelong learning can have on mental health and wellbeing and suggests that stronger links need to be formed between the Department of Health and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
NIACE's continued dedication to tackling mental health and disability issues through lifelong learning will be further highlighted at its Annual Disability Conference - Learning Enabled - in Sheffield, on 24 November 2009.
Speakers at the conference will include:
- Jonathan Shaw, Minister for Disabled People
- Rob Grieg, Chief Executive of the National Development Team for inclusion (NTDi); NDTi have partnered up with NIACE for the conference
- Hannah Ostermeyer, a learner with mental health difficulties, speaking about her experiences of Further Education (Hannah's experiences will also feature in an interview in October's edition of Adults Learning)
- Toni Fazaeli, Chief Executive, Institute for Learning will deliver the 4th John Tomlinson Memorial Lecture; Professor Tomlinson chaired the committee of inquiry which resulted in the groundbreaking report, Inclusive Learning (HMSO, 1996)
- Representatives from the two new agencies which will replace the Learning and Skills Ccouncil (LSC) - the Young Peoples Learning Agency (YPLA) and the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) - giving participants a glimpse into the future
The conference - sponsored by the LSC - will also focus on the Machinery of Government changes, reflect on protecting the legacy of the LSC in relation to disabled learners and will host stands from key organisations in the disability world.
