Disabled adult learners are often marginalised and can have difficulties getting to classes. A new book offering travel solutions for disabled adult learners - Equity Road - has been published by NIACE today, Monday 30 November 2009.

Equity Road - a guide for learners, learning providers and carers alike - offers a systematic approach that can help learners travel to classes and take up the learning opportunities available to them, by asking the following five questions:

  • Are learners on the right course?
  • Have their travel needs and potential been assessed?
  • Can they use public transport?
  • Do they have access to other means of transport?
  • Do they have access to benefits or other means to pay for travel?

David Ewens, co-author of the publication, said:

"The opportunities for disabled adults to develop a more independent approach to living are lost through unimaginative and sometimes expensive travel solutions. Travel costs for disabled learners can also be a daunting and challenging issue for learning providers."

"This book suggests an approach that gives more independence to learners and outlines a fairer way of distributing finite resources. I hope it will make a big difference to learners and improve their travel and learning experiences."
