NIACE welcomes the Global Action Week for Education as a concerted way to raise awareness of the need for education across the world.

Jan Eldred, Associate Director for International Development, says,

"NIACE is particularly pleased that the theme for this year's Global Action Week for Education embraces youth and adult literacy, a vital element in developing, not only individual skills and knowledge but also contributing to educated families, active communities and economic and entrepreneurial activities."

"The Big Read theme magnificently complements the work NIACE has been involved in with Quick Reads.  By promoting excellent reading materials, written by leading authors and writers, designed especially for adults who find reading challenging, Quick Reads are helping thousands of adults in the UK and beyond to realise their ambitions to read, not only for themselves but for their children and their employment."

"NIACE believes that by encouraging and developing family and intergenerational learning and literacy, not only will many of the 774 million adults (around 60% of whom are women) be supported but so will the 75 million children who are not in primary education. Never has the old saying that if you ‘educate a mother you educate a family' been more true."
