Members of the Institute must have a bona fide interest in
education and training for adults. Organisations and individuals need to
join formally to become a member, and will pay a yearly
subscription to NIACE. Upon joining NIACE, all members sign an
agreement to say they support NIACE aims and
objectives.
The Institute’s members are the governing body of NIACE
and have a major role in shaping NIACE’s agenda. There are currently over
500 corporate members, which includes
universities, colleges, open college networks, the Open University,
research organisations, the WEA, BBC, LSC and all local education
authorities in England and Wales. These LEAs are treated as full corporate
members but NIACE does not charge them a fee.
There are over 200 individual members, including teachers, support
workers, consultants and retired people. Some members are also awarded
honorary life membership in recognition of distinguished service to adult
continuing education. Members based in Wales also automatically become
members of NIACE
Dysgu Cymru.
From this wider membership, the Trustees of NIACE and other committee
members are elected. The Trustees are the members of the
Company Board, the group that
maintains a strategic overview of the work of the organisation and its
annual work programme. There are other committees such as the
Policy, Audit and
FGP Committees which are set up with a
remit for their own specific area of NIACE operations. As a member, you
will be eligible to be nominated to stand for election to these
committees.
Beliefs and values: those who are committed to NIACE’s beliefs and
values may want to join the organisation in order to help further the
cause.
Role in governance: members have the opportunity to influence
NIACE’s strategic direction.
Practical benefits: members receive discounts on
publications and
conferences, as well as free
publications and journals and a monthly members’ e-newsletter.
NIACE also benefits from its members…
Being a Company that consists of all its members, acting
collectively, NIACE maintains credibility and is valued as an
organisation representing learners and providers from across the
spectrum of adult learning.
NIACE’s members provide a network of expertise and are a rich source
of advice and of partnership working. The Institute gets input from
members on policy items and advice to government and it is a distinctive
strength of the Institute’s work that it is able to call on its active
members. NIACE is also able to collaborate with providers across all
sectors of post-compulsory education and training.
Through its membership NIACE maintains active contact with thousands
of learners and providers in the field.
Members and other partners often supply speakers at Institute
conferences and seminars,
collaborate on joint events, contribute to journals, write
publications, and represent
the Institute to other organisations.
The membership encourages effective networking to ensure that we all
improve and benefit from best practice.
NIACE membership has two main categories: Corporate (for
organisations of all kinds, including universities, colleges, open college
networks and research organisations) and Individual (for teachers, support
workers or others involved or interested in the adult learning agenda).
