Families, Learning and Progression

This web page is for family learning practitioners and managers interested in developing effective methods of sampling progression of the adult participants from family learning programmes. It comprises a resource pack, funded by the Learning and Skills Council, developed from research and case studies with local authority family learning providers. The pack is supplemented by examples of reports and materials kindly supplied by providers.

Now available: copies of the presentations and ‘defining progression’ activity used at the launch events on 24 September and 6 October 2008.

Data protection: the basics

Thumbnail of "Data protection"

This sheet contains the basic information on data protection when collecting family learning progression information. It is current at the time of printing, however, it should not be relied on as legal advice. It does not include a full list of the national indicators. It is intended for use by managers and practitioners to illustrate the contribution of family learning to the local policy agenda and local area agreements.

It is not a definitive list but should be used to support a discussion with the learner. Its usage is not limited to Family Learning Impact Funding programmes as it can be used to help track progression from any family learning programmes.

Example flyer for learners

Thumbnail of "Example flyer for learners" This provides an example which may be given to parents and carers at the start of a Family Learning Impact Funding programme to explain the three year progression monitoring process. It has space to insert local information and contacts. It is available for download below. Although it is designed for use with Family Learning Impact Funding programmes, it is adaptable for use with other family learning programmes that providers may wish to track progression from.

Checklist for planning for progression on Family Learning Courses

Thumbnail of "Checklist "

This links family learning course planning to generic outcomes: new skills, gains in confidence and understanding, improved communications, changed behaviours and changed relationships with family and community. These outcomes relate to the different categories of progression. The checklist supports tutors and managers to ensure the intended outcomes are linked to course planning and activities. The checklist is for use on Family Learning Impact Funding courses, but it can be used for any family learning course.
