Funded by the Active Community Unit at the Home Office, Learning from Experience was a project managed by NIACE, which ran from April to September 2004. It sought to gather the critical success factors of three established voluntary and community sector Learning Consortia, all of whom were partners in the project. In addition, it involved a fourth partner, who it was hoped would consider building a new Consortium. In brief, the project explored the following:

• Why and how consortia are developed.

  > Step by step guide to developing Voluntary and Community Sector Learning Consortia.
• Consortia structures and how they organise.
  > Step by step guide to developing Voluntary and Community Sector Learning Consortia.
• What makes them work, keys to success.
• How they are involved in adult literacy language and numeracy, particularly when embedded into other VCS activities
  > Embedded Basic Skills
• What are the helps and hindrances
• How they achieve sustainability and fund their activities
