Priorities

NIACE carries out research, development and consultancy activities in all areas of adult learning. The exact pattern at any time depends upon policy priorities and funding opportunities. Core research and development staff work with a range of colleagues from academia, industry and commerce and the public sector in the conduct of commissioned projects.  The results of this work are often published by the Institute or others as books or articles (details of which can be found in the Book Shop).

NIACE work is funded by a variety of bodies including UK national and local government, the European Union, the Higher Education Funding Council; the Further Education Funding Council; the Trade Union Congress; National Lotteries Charities Board, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The Institute's broad research and development priorities are:

bulletto monitor patterns of access, participation and outcomes.
bulletto increase understanding of adult learning and learners.
bulletto support innovation in provision for adult learners.
bulletto inform policymaking in the education of adults.
bulletencourage the sharing and dissemination of good practice and innovation.

Work on these objectives is undertaken in all sectors, and at all levels; local, institutional, regional, national and international. Audiences include teachers, institutional managers, development agents and policymakers. Research and development activities include research (pure and applied), consultancy, developmental workshops, networking, and development of materials.

Other Websites

NIACE has formal and informal links with a number of specialist research centres, a range of which can be found by going to the appropriate Research Section listed above.

For example: the section on Older Learners, contains links to other organisations whose work in some way impacts on the lives of older learners.

Links to organisations with a more general remit (i.e. those which cater for more than one particular user-group) can be found on the General Research Links page.
