In 2006, NIACE and LLU+ were commissioned by the Department for Education and Skills and the Home Office to produce this pack, drawing on existing good practice in ESOL provision and the recommendations of the Advisory Group chaired by Sir Bernard Crick, in their report, The New and the Old.
We looked at the six broad categories of study proposed in the Crick
recommendations and built on them.
This pack of learning materials is now divided into 14 sections about
different aspects of citizenship for delivery through ESOL provision. The
sections are not presented in order of importance or course delivery.
In 2010 the Home Office commissioned NIACE to update the pack. There are three
updated sections:
- What is citizenship
- Parliament and the electoral system
- the UK as a diverse society
and there are three new sections:
- Volunteering and citizenship
- Getting involved in your community
- Faiths and beliefs
Each section is available in PDF and in Word, so that you can adapt the
materials and create your own learners' activities.
