EUROVISIO

[Case Studies by Region] [Case Studies by Category]

Aim and objectives

The Eurovisio project aimed to make lifelong learning more visible in the communities of the four partnership countries.

Activities and lessons learned

Members of the project team designed and created an exhibition that showed real examples of how lifelong learning had changed people’s lives. The material was then exhibited to each of the partnership countries. One of the greatest lessons learnt was that they share many of the same experiences of change in their lives through ill health or family commitments, and despite huge cultural differences can share the benefits of learning new skills as adults.

Achievements

The positive outcomes from the project were a result of the successful partnership between Germany, Portugal, Greece and the UK. This was demonstrated through a professional exhibition, which presented case studies of real learners who had benefited from lifelong learning. The work was exhibited on four separate occasions in each country and was visited by the local community, representatives of the partner countries and the learners themselves. In addition a “EUROVISIO” website was produced, with information about all the exhibitions and the partnership.

Materials produced

As mentioned above there were two outcomes, exhibitions demonstrating the learners’ work and progression, which was supported by a website: www.eurovisio2005.com.

Learner involvement

Learners had a central role in the project, as much of the exhibited work was learner-focused. Many were interviewed to create the case studies for the exhibition.
Learners were also involved in organising the exhibition events and hosting the visits from the partnership countries.

Impact

On the organisation
The organisation has benefited from increased levels of awareness of lifelong learning and also favourable comments by Ofsted who were inspecting the college at the time when the exhibition was displayed at the Adult Community Centre. Overall the Ofsted grade was Outstanding.

On staff
The staff at the college were encouraged to work collaboratively to organise, prepare and promote the exhibitions. Curriculum staff, marketing staff, learner supporters, managers, Directors and the Principal were all involved.

On adult learners
Enthusiastic cooperation from the learners to tell their stories was essential to the exhibition, as were learners’ visits to the partnership countries to share their experiences with other learners.

On outside organisations
The UK exhibition was well attended, by other adult education organisations, local councillors, the director of libraries and the Mayor.
